BONGI MBONAMBI: ‘I NEVER RACIALLY SWORE AT HIM’

Springboks and rugby fans are supporting Bongi Mbonambi after the hooker denied racially abusing Tom Curry. He also hit out at England and the flanker in the process by describing them as ‘unprofessional’.

Mbonambi also thinks it’s sad when people who live in a first-world country think the rest of the world speaks English only.

“They could have gone on a website and looked for an English dictionary and looked for the word in Afrikaans,” added Mbonambi.

South Africans and Springboks’ fans said on X that South Africans generally speak more than one language and English isn’t Bongi’s first language. He speaks English to accommodate the English and speaks Afrikaans with his teammates.

A rugby fan @Cym_Wal also defended the hooker on X on Wednesday and said: “Wales understands @BongiMbonambi! A select few English people accuse the Welsh of changing conversations to Welsh just because English people walk into a shop or pub. A classic arrogance shown by some who expect everyone to be speaking English.”

Daily Mail reports that the hooker also denies knowing Curry when he was asked about his relationship with him.

“I don’t know him at all,” said Mbonambi.

SPINGBOKS FANS: ‘SOUTH AFRICANS SPEAK MORE THAN ONE LANGUAGE’

@BohemianArtChic: “South Africans speak more than one language. English isn’t Bongi’s 1st language…but he spoke to the English journalist in English…and when he is with the Springboks, they speak Afrikaans in the team. I wonder how many you can speak.”

@louwjl: “The boy who cried wolf. A week before the final and then suddenly pulls out the card “it happened in Nov 2022”. Good player but this will tarnish his career unfortunately.”

@musa_mansa: “Looking at the comments it is clear that English people are just doing damage control now. This whole drama is becoming very embarrassing for them.”

@lambertusc: “I still find it strange that only Tom heard it, none of his teammates or referee, but, playing in a team of 12 Afrikaans speakers he never heard or overheard the term “kant”?”
