‘Hurt people hurt people’: Unathi Nkayi’s kids call out her parenting

Unathi Nkayi’s children have seen their mom through some tough times. The media personality got personal on Instagram on 17 July.

On Monday, 17 July, South African media personality Unathi Nkayi took to Instagram and shared that her children recently opened up to her about having seen a change in the way that she treated them over the last few years which prompted her to apologise to them.


Former Idols judge, Unathi Nkayi got candid with her social media followers recently and told them that her son, Sinako, and daughter, Imbo, had opened her eyes about her behaviour towards them in the past six years. Her teenagers shared with her that they have seen a good change in her behaviour recently and appreciated the way she parents now.

“My daughter and son over the weekend were reminding me of how different I was 5 to 6 years ago. My daughter started by laughing and saying ‘Snako do you remember how Moms used to shout at us for everything about 5 to 6 years ago?’ They both laughed and told me how much they prefer the patient, kind and most importantly fun mom I am now,” Nkayi said.

Unathi Nkayi was previously married to renowned South African DJ and radio presenter, Thomas Msengana aka Bad Boy T. And, the couple went their separate ways in 2017, Zalebs reported. Nkayi reportedly found out that Msengana was cheating on her. She was said to have came across nude photos and explicit chats dating back to 2014 on Msengana’s phone.

In her post, the former Kaya FM radio presenter said that she explained to her children that she was going through a lot during the time and apologised for treating them unfairly.

“I explained to them the concept of ‘Hurt people hurt people’ and that transitioning through the divorce was hard for me. I apologised to them for all the unfair treatment [that] I clearly put them through and thanked them for holding me accountable for how I was back then and how I made them feel,” she added.

Nkayi also shared that she is working on herself and frequently sees a therapist.
