He excelled in water polo during his school days, even representing the national team at a junior level. However, his destiny lay in rugby union, where he would achieve great honours.

His rugby journey began when he was selected to play for the Border School team at the prestigious 1990 Craven Week tournament. Andrews continued to shine, earning a spot in the SA Student team in 1993 and later in the SA Universities team in 1994.

THE CURRIE CUP

The next chapter of Mark Andrews’ career saw him don the jersey for Natal, where he played an integral role in the team’s Currie Cup victories in 1995 and 1996. His imposing presence and skills as a lock made him a standout player.

Internationally, Andrews made his test debut for South Africa on June 11, 1994, against England in Cape Town. This marked the beginning of a remarkable international career, during which he played 77 tests and 13 mid-week games for the Springboks.
