Notorious rapist and murderer Thabo Bester’s nationality has come into question following more pictures of him on social media.

The man dubbed as the “Facebook rapist” appeared at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday, 14 April — a day after he and his partner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, were deported from Tanzania.

Bester was re-arrested in Tanzania last Friday following his escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein on 3 May 2022, after staging his death in a fire.

The convicted criminal is notorious for luring young women, raping and robbing them under the guise of lucrative modelling jobs. One of his victims, Nomfundo Tyhulu, a car saleswoman and model who was his girlfriend, lost her life after he stabbed her to death in Cape Town at a bed and breakfast. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2012.

Bester is currently detained at Kgosi Mampuru II C-max prison in Pretoria. He will be charged with escape, defeating the ends of justice, violation of a body and fraud. The case against him has been postponed to 16 May.

His love interest, Magudumana, is remanded in custody after her first appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday.

National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola detailed Magudumana’s charges: “The charges Magudumana will be facing is the aiding and abetting the escape [of Thabo Bester]. She will also be facing murder for a number of bodies that we did find in her possession. Also, violation of bodies and also fraud charges.”

In media briefing in Pretoria on Friday, Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi revealed that Bester is not registered as a South African in the National Population Register.

According to Motsoaledi, home affairs officials could only establish that Bester was born at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on 13 June 1986.

Motsoaledi added that the rapist does not have an identity document (ID), is not registered on the asylum seeker and refugee database, or on the Visa database.

The revelation that Bester does not have an SA ID has raised questions about his nationality. But the biggest “giveaway” that Bester may not be South African — for many fans — is his appearance. Social media users are questioning his hair, saying he looks like a foreign national.

The term “my friend” — which is a South African street language term for a foreign national of Pakistani, Somali or Arabic descent — started making the rounds on Twitter.
