Thabo Bester – nicknamed ‘El-Chapo’ – planned escape in 2016!

Thabo Bester may be one of South Africa’s most brazen criminals, but according to a fellow prison inmate, he got his inspiration from a South American drug lord called Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. 

Like Bester – a convicted rapist, murderer, and fraudster – the notorious offender also escaped a maximum security prison.

Bester – allegedly, with the assistance of his girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana, faked his death and escaped his prison cell at the Magaung Correctional Centre last year. According to reports, Bester was arrested in Tanzania in the early hours of Friday morning.

THABO BESTER’S LIFE BEHIND BARS

Speaking to You Magazine, Thabang Khumu [not his real name] befriended Thabo Bester at the Magaung Correctional Centre.

He said: “When I met him, I gave him the nickname El Chapo.”

He added: “He can catch anyone…[and] He is able of betraying his own mother”.

Khumu claims Bester arrived at prison in 2012 with a laptop and cellphone. It was later reported that Bester ran a multi-million-rand company called 21st Century Media from his jail cell. The man dubbed the “Facebook Rapist” even claimed to be a hotspot businessman related to South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe.

Khumu added of Bester’s elaborate plans: “He made an army for himself for protection. He paid people money so no one would know what he is up to”.

Bester escaped prison in May 2022 by faking his suicide in a fire and dumping a dead body mistaken to be him. Like Bester, El Chapo had a sensational prison escape. In 2001, the drug kingpin fled a Mexican maximum-security prison by hiding in a laundry cart.

RELATION TO THIS SERIAL KILLER, RAPIST?

Meanwhile, one Twitter conspiracy theorist has linked Thabo Bester to another serial rapist – Ananias Mathe.

According to the tweep, the Mozambique-born criminal, imprisoned in SA, could be a direct relation to Bester. This after Bester’s mother, Maria Mabaso, claims he was conceived after she was raped by an unknown man.

Mathe – nicknamed “Houdini” – escaped his C-Max Penitentiary cell by smearing himself with Vaseline and sliding out of his cell window, which measured only 20 cm × 60 cm.
