‘Team comes first’: Rassie Erasmus shows love to Bongi Mbonambi

Springboks boss Rassie Erasmus is known for his controversial statements on social media. But this time, he’s chosen to make a subtle show of support to Bongi Mbonambi, who was accused of “racially attacking” Tom Curry.

According to England Rugby, the South African player allegedly made a racial slur against Curry in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final last weekend.

The union claims Mbonambi also allegedly abused him in a test match between England and SA last year.

RASSIE ERASMUS SHOWS SUPPORT TO BONGI MBONAMBI

According to eagled-eyed Twitter or X users, Rassie Erasmus changed the header on his account to a picture of Bongi Mbonambi. 

The Springboks boss has kept a low profile in the days since the Boks’s win against England.

The show of support touched many Springboks fans.

Last week, Rassie previously tweeted his support for player Cobus Reinach and his family. This, after the Springbok received death threats from French players. He’s also had the back of Mannie Libbok, who was cruelly criticised by supporters.

SA RUGBY RESPONDS TO WORLD RUGBY STATEMENT

Meanwhile, SA Rugby has responded to a World Rugby statement that revealed that it would not be taking action against Bongi Mbonambi.

According to the union, there was “insufficient evidence” to prove Tom Curry’s claims.

SA Rugby shared its own statement, posting: “Any form of racism is abhorrent to SA Rugby and the Springbok team, whose purpose is to do everything in its power to assist in uniting our diverse and multicultural nation.

It continued: “Bongi Mbonambi is an experienced, respected and decorated Test player and, needless to say, denied the allegations from the outset. SA Rugby has absolute faith in the honesty and integrity of Bongi.

“The team’s focus remains, as it has throughout the week, on Saturday’s match against New Zealand.”
