POLOKWANE CITY PLAYERS SURVIVE

Zimoja reports that Polokwane City players were involved in a car accident in their hometown on Monday and were treated for minor injuries after their bus hit a 4×4 bakkie.

This is after the club’s recent promotion from first division to Premier Soccer League for the 2023/24 season.

A source reveals to the publication that their co-coach, Phuti Mohafe, who reportedly doesn’t have a PDP permit to drive the bus, was trying to beat a red robot.

It is reported that half of the players received treatment in hospital while others were discharged after being treated for shock.

The players were also involved in a car accident in 2015 when their team bus was involved in a minor accident in their hometown.

Polokwane Municipality Traffic Assistant Superintendent Kgaugelo Mphago said the accident took place at the corner of Marshall and Biccard Streets near the City Centre, and the drivers of the two cars said the robot was green for both of them.

“But according to eye witness the Polokwane City FC driver skipped the red light,” added Mphago.

PREVIOUS CAR ACCIDENTS

EWN reported in November 2012 that four Polokwane City players, Koketso Takalo, Robert Mphuti, Moeketsi Nthete and Silvester Mpaketsane, died in a car accident.

It is believed the club’s minibus was hit by a bakkie and collided with a bus in oncoming traffic along the R71 in Limpopo.

The driver of the bakkie, who was 36 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

SABC reported in February 2018 that 26-year-old Polokwane FC defender Mogau Tshehla was killed in a car crash at Kwagga in Mpumalanga.

The team’s captain at the time, Jabulani Maluleke, told the outlet that Tshehla’s team-mates were saddened by his passing.

“At the moment, it is a sad loss for us. He has been part of the family, the news never sat well with us since yesterday. I just want to thank God for the opportunity that we had with Mogau whether it is good or bad, may his soul rest in peace.”
