In 2018, Leeuwkop Prison was reported to be one of the most crowded prisons in South Africa with an estimated 36 000 prisoners and the number increasing on a daily basis, EWN reported. The prison has made headlines on numerous occasions following murdered wardens, arson, and escapes. Gauteng Regional Commissioner Grace Molatedi said overcrowding in the prison is an ongoing problem at Leeuwkop Prison.

“People are committing more and more crimes and we are getting more offenders, even though we are trying to put interventions in place to reduce overcrowding,” she was quoted as saying.

MORE ABOUT THE IMPRISONED RAPPER’S SENTENCE

Pitch Black Afro was found guilty of culpable homicide, Sunday World reported. He initially faced charges of premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice but was found not guilty on both counts. However, because he had already spent a year and five months in custody while awaiting trial, the rapper’s sentence meant that he would only spend less than three years in prison from the time of his sentencing.
