Gender-based activists Women For Change have vowed to stand with Dr Nandipha Magudumana IF she is proven to be a victim of convicted rapist, murderer, and fraudster Thabo Bester.

The outspoken activist organisation has weighed into the high-profile case of the controversial couple. On Thursday morning, the duo arrived in South Africa, where they were immediately arrested.

Nandipha is expected to appear in court imminently.

Speaking exclusively to The South African, Women For Change discussed Dr Nandipha’s involvement with notorious criminal Thabo Bester.

Founder Sabrina Walter said: “It is clear that Thabo Bester is incredibly conniving and manipulative and has been able to influence, mislead, and control many people around him.  Therefore, he may have used these same tactics to influence and control Nandipha”.

According to forensic psychologist Gerard Labuschagne, Thabo Bester’s charming yet calculative personality likely attracted Dr Nandipha.

Labuschagne interviewed Thabo Bester in 2011, where the latter casually confessed to rape and murder. Speaking to eNCA last week, the mental health professional said: “It’s not the first time we’ve seen this.

“It’s a certain type of psychology of people who get involved with people who are awaiting trial or are in prison or convicted offenders.

“He’s a conman, so he’s going to be fostering relationships with people that have a benefit for him. He’s a mastermind manipulator. You can’t rule out how much influence he had over her”.

Walter meanwhile, described Dr Nandipha as a “successful doctor and businesswoman, which creates the impression that she is intelligent, tenacious, determined, and strong-willed.”

However, the Women For Change leader conceded that the doctor could be just as guilty as Bester.

She said: “It is important to remember that women are not only or always victims or accomplices to evil men. They can, themselves, also be guilty of committing heinous crimes.

“Based on the available evidence, Nandipha appears to have played an instrumental role in Bester’s escape and further crimes, so to say that this is simply because of manipulation or coercion, diminishes both her agency and her responsibility in these crimes.”

Walter continued: “We can never know what goes on behind closed doors, so we cannot say whether she is/was acting freely or is under some form of control.”

She added: “At this point, however, it does not seem like she is a victim of Thabo Bester, but rather his co-offender.”

According to National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola, Dr Nandipha will face charges of aiding and abetting a criminal, fraud, and another of violating bodies of deceased.

The mother of two is accused of helping Thabo Bester foil a prison escape by planting a dead body in his Magaung prison cell. She’s also accused of running several fraudulent businesses registered in her name. Nandipha is also possibly facing criminal charges by the Health Practitioner’s Council of South Africa, which accused her of working illegally.

Should Nandipha testify that she was indeed a victim of Thabo Bester, Women For Change will be in her corner

Walter added: “Many women who are complicit in crimes are victims of abuse and carry out crimes under threat of violence/abuse or as a form of self-preservation. These women are victims of psychological, emotional, and/or physical abuse.

“Women for Change stands with all victims of gender-based violence. If it becomes evident that Nandipha has been a victim of such abuse, WFC will stand with her as with all other victims”.
