In the midst of Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Maguduma’s movie-like romance, Katlego Bereng went missing in March 2022, and after several months of searching for him, his parents were finally able to lay their son to rest on Sunday, 7 May in Bloemfontein.

Katlego Bereng was just one of the many victims in Thabo Bester’s vicious trail of destruction on his elaborate plan to escape from prison. The 31-year-old died after suffering injuries to his head and was placed in Bester’s prison cell as Bester’s disguised dead body. He was burnt beyond recognition on the day the recently captured fugitive escaped from Mangaung Correctional Centre.

The deceased father of two was said to have been a staunch Bloemfontein Celtics supporter and executive member of their supporters’ association, EWN reported. A video doing the rounds online shows how some members have mourned him with a song. Sharing the video online, a Twitter user captioned,

“Family and friends have gathered to say their final goodbyes to #KatlegoBereng. His body was planted in #ThaboBester’s cell as part of his elaborate escape from prison. His funeral is being held in Bloemfontein today.”

“Masele gather around his coffin singing “Nandipha why did you do this to us?”

According to The Citizen, the murder charges against Bester by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have been dropped. Bester, along with girlfriend Dr Nandipha and her father Zolile Sekeleni were initially charged with Bereng’s murder. An autopsy reportedly revealed that Bereng’s charred body had paraffin in his trachea when he was set alight.

“May he rest in peace. And condolences to his family. To have suffered such a loss so publicly, I can’t even imagine how hard it must be for them,” @TanaDJoseph said.

“Can never forgive Dr Nandipha and Thabo Bester. That’s one thing for sure. Wish they can just bring back the death penalty and be the example,” @KingDavid2022 wrote.
