A popular Soweto-based butchery and tshisa nyama owned by former Bafana Bafana player Maimane Phiri has been linked to a meat heist scandal following a hijacking that took place in Boksburg on Tuesday, ZiMoja reported.

According to the publication, Maimane Phiri has reportedly denied having known that the meat founded in his fridge was stolen. In a joint statement, a local ZSS tactical security company, together with SAPS and JMPD, revealed that they had been dispatched to 7th Joe Nhlanhla Avenue in a tavern in Alexandra. Upon arrival, they reportedly witnessed suspects busy offloading meat and arrested two suspects at the scene.

The former Bafana Bafana player has reportedly admitted to storing the meat in his fridges, however, claims he was not aware that the meat was stolen. Xolani Fihla, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent is said to have confirmed that a shocking R700 000 worth of meat was found at the said location.

More drama have occurred at Maimane Phiri tavern and tshisa nyama in Soweto.

In 2021, the former mid-fielder was involved in another head-scratching incident concerning his tavern. According to TimesLIVE, Maimane Phiri was shot twice in an incident with the assailant then turning the gun on himself right before fatally shooting another victim.

The gunman was reported to have allegedly chased his girlfriend into the tavern where Phiri and patrons had intervened leading the gunman to fire shots. Although the former soccer player had been shot twice, he’s said to have not sustained any life-threatening injuries, having been shot in the arm and leg.

At the time, SA Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lt Col Mavela Masondo was quoted as saying,

“Police have opened a case of murder, attempted murder, and an inquest docket after a man allegedly shot two people and shot himself in Alexandra on Thursday, 30 December 2021, at approximately 7 pm.”
