The new Kaizer Chiefs Kappa kits have officially been launched. But while football fans are loving the nostalgic designs, they’re not loving the price tags.

The soccer jersey – reportedly for the 23/24 season – marks the return of the Italian sportswear sponsor after more than two decades of Nike designs.

The new kits were launched on Tuesday, 25 July, at a star-studded event at the Sandton Convention Centre.

KAIZER CHIEFS KAPPA KIT PRICE NOT A WINNER

Ahead of the official launch, Twitter users had hinted that stock of the Kaizer Chiefs’ new kit was already in stores like Studio 88 and Totalsports.

According to several tweets, the home and away jerseys are priced between R1000 and R1300.

But fans have claimed the price tag is too steep. Others claimed it was no comparison to previous sponsors, Nike.

@Ntorealthabizo1: “We can’t be buying Kappa at da same price as Nike. Daylight robbery!”

@nziro101: “The kit is beautiful, but the price is no, no no!”

@kiddietee: “This is taking advantage of our love for this team”

IT’S GIVING SPRINGBOKS?

Before the official launch of the kits this week, a picture of the home and away Kaizer Chiefs kit appeared on social media.

The home kit – which boasted the team’s official colours of yellow and black – was reminiscent of earlier Kappa designs from the 90s.

However, the away kit was a completely new look for Amakhosi fans. With yellow and green, the jersey closely resembled the Springboks’ new Nike kit.

‘RESTORE THE GLORY DAYS’

On social media, Kaizer Chiefs fans have praised the nostalgic designs, which is precisely the look Kappa – which sponsored the teams’ 1989 – 1996 looks – was going for.

Last year, Amakhosi marketing director Jessica Motaung said on their partnership in a statement: “We are excited to team up with Kappa once again, a brand with which Kaizer Chiefs set new records and established itself as trendsetters in African football in the early 1990s.”

Kappa South Africa CEO Michael Joseph added that the brand was confident it would restore the team’s glory days, as previously experienced.

He added: “Kappa, together with Kaizer Chiefs, are going to reinstall the romance of the 1990s and deliver something extraordinary to these fans.”
