Nine months after sharing a disturbing video of his facial paralysis after contracting Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS), Justin Bieber has revealed his life is slowly returning to normalcy.

The pop singer shared an Instagram Story in which he shared the positive health news – the return of his facial mobility.

In June 2022, the 29-year-old revealed that the illness had affected nerves in his face and ear, resulting in what he hoped was a temporary paralysis. The star also asked his fans to “pray” for him to make a complete recovery.

According to WebMD, Ramsay Hunt syndrome is in the same family of viruses that causes chickenpox and monkeypox: the varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

In a YouTube video, US doctor Anthony Youn explained that the VZV virus becomes reactivated after laying dormant for years. This can happen when individuals have a weakened immune system. The VZV virus can manifest in shingles in any part of the body.

Dr. Youn added that RSV could also lead to hearing loss.

He continued: “This can be scary and devastating for a musician like Justin Bieber who relies on his hearing and facial muscles for his career”.

UK doctor Charles Nduka – revealed other autoimmune illness, like Lyme Disease, which Justin Bieber also suffers from can reactivate the VZV virus. He told MailOnline: “Usually the people that develop this have some other issue going on that causes their immune system to be depressed”.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome can be treated by either steroids or anti-viral medication and has a relatively high full recovery rate if treated within three days.

Dr. Youn went on to encourage adults and young children to get vaccinated against chickenpox. He added: “If you’re over 50 and you’ve had chickenpox before, you may want to consider the shingles vaccine”.
