Bheki Mkhwane: ‘The so-called celebrities are not actors’

Theater legend Bheki Mkhwane, who’s starred on TV shows such as The River and Isibaya opens up about his role in Nikiwe and the acting industry.

The talented actor Bheki Mkhwane, who exited The River as Bukhosi has joined e.tv’s telenovela Nikiwe in June as Mhlaba.

Mkhwane who is populalry known for his Isibaya character as Samsom tells The Citizen that he is having a great time with his latest role in Nikiwe.

“I am always excited when invited to do my work because that’s what I have mastered my entire life.”

The theatre legend adds that he loves working with the young ones because he always uses them as a mirror to look into his craft. He looks at them and says he once burned his fingers as well.

The publication adds that the director and playwright’s latest role Mhlaba is a traditional man with a limited worldview and puts his family above everything.

The producer Bheki Mkhwane, who’s been in the acting industry for over 30 years also criticizes the South African government for not looking after their actors.

“Our work now is driven by so-called celebrities, and I don’t think those people are actors, they just want to model in front of the camera and be seen on the screen.”

The thespian adds that even the government is not looking after actor. When he was overseas, he realised that their equity was very strong. Artists are looked after, and there is a law that takes care of them.

TVSA reports that Mkhwane has also appeared in Uzalo season one as Melusi Mdletshe and portrayed the role of Samson Ndlovu from season one to eight in Isibaya.
