Steve Hofmeyr has slammed the “barbaric” act of EFF leader Julius Malema, who courted controversy over a recent video of him slaughtering a cow.

The outspoken Afrikaans singer shared his views after a clip of the controversial politician went viral. In it, Malema was admonished for his inhumane method of killing the animal.

The act formed part of the EFF’s 10th-anniversary celebrations.

STEVE HOFMEYR SLAMS JULIUS MALEMA

Earlier this month, Julius Malema courted controversy for all the wrong reasons amid the EFF’s ceremonial slaughter event, which took place in Magaliesberg.

According to the EFF, dozens of animals had been donated to the party. They would be slaughtered at their 29 July event, to be held at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg.

In the disturbing clip, Malema attempted to slaughter a cow but struggled at length after using a knife that caused the animal deep distress.

The video evoked a strong reaction from the public, who called on the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) to intervene. Animal activists objected that the animal had not been afforded a quick and humane death.

Steve posted on his Twitter account: “Every farmer and hunter I know works elsewhere with their love for the land and the cattle that graze on it. Then one politician comes along and becomes as beastly as we thought he was. Gandhi said you would do to humans what you do to animals”.

In a Facebook video posted on Monday, 24 July, Steve – an avid hunter – once again called Malema “barbaric” over his actions.

Welkom op Internasionale NIGGIE&NEFIE-DAG asook INTERNASIONALE TEQUILA-DAG. Ek praat vanoggend oor hoofstroomvermaak, oor Hollywood, oor 7de Laan, oor Egoli, ek praat oor Jason Aldean se (kastig) omstrede lied, en ek praat oor Julius Malema, oor LGBTQIA+, oor die naweek se konserte, oor Orania en oor hoekom ek nog nie politiek betree het nie. * MY VLIEGTUIG WAG. Ek land more in Windhoek. Ek kom vir 'n bietjie hitte in Windhoek, Swakopmund en Tsumeb.

FIKILE MBALULA FIRES SHOTS AT EFF

Steve Hofmeyr is not the only prominent South African speaking out on Malema’s slaughter video. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula also had something to say about it.

Taking a shot at his party rival, Fikile said in a recent press briefing: “I see people who come and promise heaven and earth and dont even know how to slaughter cows. They just need to be taken to the SPCA”.
