DJ Maphorisa fails to have assault charge dropped
On Wednesday, the chief prosecutor declined DJ Maphorisa’s representations to have the assault charge laid by Thuli Phongolo withdrawn.

Submissions made by DJ Maphorisa, in a bid to have the assault charge against him dropped, have failed.
DJ MAPHORISA’S CASE ESCALATED TO THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS
The producer extraordinaire, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 12 July, Sunday World reports.

His matter was postponed yet again and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The Mnike hitmaker will return to court on 26 July.
Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said Maphorisa’s representations were declined by the chief prosecutor.
“He is exercising his right to follow the next step, which is to submit representations to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” said Mjonondwane.

ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS, WITHDRAWAL AND JOINT STATEMENTS
In May, Maphorisa was granted R4 000 bail by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating up and strangling his girlfriend and former Generations: The Legacy actress Thuli Phongolo during an argument at her home in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The former Rockville actress alleged in a police statement that Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her on her chest. He also allegedly slapped her across the face.
“He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the police statement read.
Although the actress filed a withdrawal statement the day after Maphorisa was arrested, her plea had not been finalised as the NPA needed time to investigate.

Prior to the first court appearance after receiving bail, the couple released a joint statement; saying they want to deal with the matter privately.
When the producer and DJ appeared on 14 June, the matter was postponed as there were no state representatives during the proceedings. He appeared in court on 5 July. However, the case was postponed once again.
