The Sundowns football club put South Africa on the map on Sunday when they became the Inaugural African Football League champions after beating Morroco’s Wydad Casablanca 2-Nill in the second leg of the final at the Loftus Versfeld stadium. To celebrate their victory, the President’s son, Tumelo Ramaphosa rushed to his social media feed and posted a photo with his uncle, the one and only Dr Patrice Motsepe and captioned it: “We are led @sundownsfc”.

Dr Patrice Motsepe is said to have started buying into Sundowns football club back in 2003 and increased his stake from 51 per cent to 100 per cent in 2004, the Sundowns website reported. Thereafter, he renamed the club ‘Mamelodi’ Sundowns. As the club made history and became the Inaugural African Football League champions, they reached out to their fans on social media and thanked them for their unwavering support.

Meanwhile, FIFA president Gianni Infantino reportedly expressed his delight to be on the African continent and to have been able to witness football history, SABC reported. “The most popular sport in South Africa by far is football and that’s why there’s a huge focus on the development and growth of football. The Springboks have uplifted the spirit and the unity in this country which is beautiful and we are confident that football is gonna do the same,” Infantino was quoted as saying.
