RIP: ‘Carte Blanche’ and MNet pay tribute to the late Derek Watts

Seasoned ‘Carte Blanche’ presenter and journalist Derek Watts sadly died on Tuesday, 22 August at 74 years old after battling cancer.

Veteran Carte Blanche co-worker, journalist Derek Watts peacefully passed away around loved ones at 74 years on Tuesday, 22 August after battling cancer for almost a year.


On 11 June, MNet announced that Derek Watts would be taking time off from work to focus on his health. According to his social media bio, Watts had been with Carte Blanche for 27 years. This year, he was hospitalised with severe sepsis following being diagnosed with skin cancer in 2022 that rapidly spread to his lungs. On Tuesday, Carte Blanche released a statement confirming that the seasoned presenter and journalist had passed away in the morning.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Carte Blanche anchor and icon, Derek Watts. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning surrounded by loved ones,” the statement read.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and children in this time of loss. He will forever hold a special place in the hearts and minds of his #CarteBlanche family,” the statement read.

Carte Blanche Executive Producer, John Webb has also shared a few words about the late journalist. “Derek took enormous comfort from the thousands of messages he received during his recovery from sepsis,” Webb said. MultiChoice Group CEO of General Entertainment, Nomsa Philiso encouraged the Watts family during this time. “We hold him, his family, and his friends in our thoughts and prayers and wish him strength and courage,” she said.

The MNet family extended their heartfelt condolences to the Watts family and the long-term journalist’s friends and loved ones.

“His commitment to his work and his determination in the face of challenges was truly remarkable. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May they find solace in the cherished memories they shared and may Derek’s legacy continue to inspire us all,” MNet said in a post.
