BONGI MBONAMBI TRAINS WITH BOKS

The Citizen reports that Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi trained with the Boks on Monday ahead of the Rugby World Cup final against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Mbonambi was accused by England’s Tom Curry of using a racial slur during the team’s Rugby World Cup semi-finals where the Boks won the game 16-15.

SA Rugby issued a statement on Sunday, 22 October saying they took the allegations seriously and would communicate with Mbonambi on the matter.

Assistant coach Daan Human said on Monday that he was unable to comment on the matter as it was being dealt with by SA Rugby and World Rugby.

Springboks’ Jean Kleyn said he wouldn’t get involved when asked about the matter but said: “Bongi is a great guy, and I’ve known him since the Stormers, but I’m not going to comment. He’s a great guy, passionate guy and a family man. He’s an upstanding guy, and I don’t (think) there’s a guy who doesn’t like him.”

SPINGBOKS’ FANS DEFEND MBONAMBI

@rugby_ap defended the Springboks player Bongi Mbonambi by sharing an audio on social media where he’s heard saying “wit kant” which means white side during the England game on Saturday.

“8 seconds in is the audio. Bongi is shouting ‘wit kant’, white side. I think this is the Springboks system call for when the opposition are switching the play. He identifies this early and alerts his defenders. You can hear him shout it repeatedly.”

@StephenJohnsto3: “This is great work. Does seem to be the most plausible explanation. I don’t think it’s fair for Curry to be criticised. If players think they experience racism, they should speak up.”

@Space_Pirate76: “That’s good footage & audio. Also, Curry looks quite hesitant before approaching the ref, could be debating with himself if he should say anything or not. Makes me think it’s a genuine mistake on his part, due to not understanding Afrikaans, rather than any malicious intent.”
