Following the release of the new audio clip, many South Africans have claimed that Tom Curry misunderstood Bongi Mbonambi’s communication, which was likely in Afrikaans and directed at his own team.

According to rugby commentator AP Cronje, Bongi Mbonambi likely shouted: “‘white kant’ to alert all his defenders that the ball was on the English side.”

Others had other plausible explanations for an alleged misunderstanding.

@Badgerstooth: “I hear “Wit kant! Wit kant!”

@VoLKANO76: “Here you go mate… he is saying Wyd Kant… communicating in defense in Afrikaans.

@hannok74: “I hear someone shouting to team mates something like ‘kom die kant’ or ‘kyk die kan'”. I don’t hear noting sounding like ‘wyd’ or ‘wit’. Me thinks curry heard ‘kant’ and then made the rest up”
