News of Rees’ hospital admission comes not long after it was announced that 7de Laan would come to an end after 23 years on air. 7de Laan’s executive producer Thandi Ramathesele said in a statement that the soapie would not be recommissioned for another season after December 2023.

“It is bittersweet to say goodbye, but we are filled with pride for the impact 7de Laan has had on our society, addressing important social issues and fostering [inclusivity], the show has made its mark on South African television. Thank you for being a part of this remarkable journey with us,” Ramathesele said.
