Police have had a hard time trying to arrest controversial businessman Peter Matsimbe – who is well known for being media personality Ayanda Thabethe’s partner and baby daddy.

According to Sunday World, the Mozambican-born entrepreneur has been dodging an arrest warrant that was issued against him at the North Gauteng High Court in 2020.

Matsimbe is reportedly facing fraud allegations involving 10 luxury cars that went missing while in his possession.

Police in Sandton are reportedly investigating the possibility that Matsimbe might have skipped the country into Zambia, as he has been reportedly coming in and out of the country without being detected.

In March this year, City Press reported that court papers filed in August 2019 reveal Matsimbe used fake documents to received funding from Standard Bank to purchase luxury vehicles from various dealerships. He reportedly did this through his company called Matsimbe and Co.

Some of the cars purchased include a Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus SUV, Lexus LX, Mclaren MP4 coupé, BMW X5 SUV, Can-Am Maverick, Audi Q3, a Nissan Navara and a Volvo mechanical horse.

In 2019, Standard Bank was granted a court judgement to get the cars back from Matsimbe which he reportedly ignored. This resulted in the bank obtaining a warrant of committal for contempt of court against Matsimbe.

The publication reports that the warrant ordered for Matsimbe to be arrested for 30 days. However, only two cars were recovered; the Mclaren and the Volvo.

Matsimbe’s brother, Richard, was reportedly embroiled in a similar scandal in which he obtained a loan of R22 million from businessperson Jacobus Jansen for two luxury cars. Sunday World reported earlier this month that Richard abandoned his Hyde Park mansions in Johannesburg to evade arrest.

Shortly after the announcement of her first baby, claims that Matsimbe was a unfaithful husband started circulating. However, in a combined statement the couple rubbished the rumours.

“We make this statement on behalf of Ms Ayanda Thabethe, who is supported by her partner, referred to as ‘PM’.

“The rumour that Thabethe is in a relationship with a married man is not true and we have not been provided with evidence proving otherwise. PM is not in any marriage or union recognised by the law,” read the statement in part.
