As if being named ‘Best City in the World’ for the fourth year running isn’t enough, Cape Town has scooped the top position in ‘Top Cities in Africa and the Middle East’ in the World’s Best Awards for Travel and Leisure.
At a ceremony in New York on Wednesday night, Gareth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development, said that he was honoured, deeply proud and grateful to everyone who voted for Cape Town to win.
Bloor went on to say that although the award means a lot, there is still a great amount of work to be done, especially with regards to the rate of urbanisation in the city. Awards like these remind tourists about the beauty that is available to them in South Africa, and can be highly beneficial to the economy.
Bloor admitted that sometimes living in such a beautiful place can allow you to take it for granted, but said, “Such accolades make us appreciate our awesome surroundings once again.”
