WOOLWORTHS ISN’T ‘GOING CASHLESS

Woolworths South Africa confirmed to The South African on Monday, 8 January that it is not going to stop accepting cash at its stores.

“Only selected WCafe’s will be going cashless. Customers will still be able to pay for all their Food, Fashion, Beauty and Home purchases with either cash or card at the tellers, as has always been the case,” said the retailer.

This comes after social media user @jvnaidoo1 took to X on Sunday, 7 January to share a Woolworths announcement about its stores “going cashless”.

The post read: “We’re going cashless. From 16 January, we would no longer accept cash as we’ve joined global responsible business that priorities customers and staff safety. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

SELECTED WOOLIES CAFES: CASHLESS

MoneyWeb reports that the retailer started introducing cashless payment changes to selected Woolies cafes towards the end of 2023.

“W Café is the concessionary outlet chain it operates adjacent or inside its premises across the country. These are coffee shops, not supermarkets.”

“In the last financial year, these concessions consumed over R800 million of goods from Woolworths Food outlets,” adds the publication.

The publication adds that it’s highly unlikely that any supermarket, least of all Woolworths, will say “no” to cash purchases any time soon.
