HIGH TIDES IN CAPE TOWN

The SABC reports that beaches in Cape Town are closed as they are deemed unsafe due to rough water conditions in the Western Cape. The municipality reveals that Victoria Bay and Herold Bay beaches in particular have been badly affected.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has urged anglers, bathers and boaters to exercise extreme caution amid new moon spring high tides this weekend and into the new week.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon reveals that spring tides cause higher-than-normal high tides and lower-than-normal low tides.

“This, coupled with gale force winds and high seas we are experiencing around the coast, we appeal to the public to be cautious.”

Lambinon adds that high tides will peak over the next few days around 4.30am, getting gradually later each day, and at around 5pm in the afternoon, also getting gradually later each day.

‘IT’S NOT A TSUNAMI’

Malissa Smuts Rosslee: “It’s not a tsunami. It’s a spring tide storm.”

@ReenvalSA: “Correction….”storm surge” not tsunami.”

@more_kgosi: “Such a little tsunami. Looks more like a high tide. But asikho lapho. Black people would have long time ran away.”

Gladwyn White: “The devastating floods experienced in Libya added by the current tsunami lookalike in Cape Town and flooding, clearly signifying the arrival of the end.”
