Checkers has finally addressed speculation it has sponsored the Springboks away kit in a quirky video posted on its social media accounts.

The retailer has been accused of having something to do with the design of the aqua blue kit, which has come under fire by rugby fans.

But was it intentional or purely coincidental?

CHECKERS RESPONDS TO SPRINGBOKS AWAY KIT CLAIMS

In the video, Checkers spoofs a scene of the artist who designed the Springboks away kit. The man – played by actor comedian Glen Biderman-Pam -attempts to answer his inspiration behind the national team’s bold new look.

“I don’t know, I’m an artist, it’s hard to tell. You tell me!” the exasperated designer says.

The scene then cuts to the man’s work desk, which is covered in Checkers Sixty 60 delivery bags and a branded scooter, which doubles as a “chair.”

WHO DESIGNED THE BOLD NEW LOOK?

While Checkers has poked fun at the social media hype, the fact is that Nike actually designs the Springboks new kit.

The national team inked a six-year deal with Nike after their contract with Asics ended in 2022.

On the inspiration behind the away kit, Nike said in a statement: “The bold new alternative jersey pays homage to the local culture through the patterned print, and the colourway was inspired by and celebrated the hues of the local nature.”
