[WATCH] ‘Afrikaans is a myth’: TikToker on differences between Durban and Pretoria

‘I never heard someone speak Afrikaans’: A South African TikToker recently revealed the differences between living in Pretoria and Durban.

Popular TikToker, Jess Baney recently took to the platform to share the biggest difference she’s seen between living in Durban and in Pretoria.

‘I NEVER HEARD SOMEONE SPEAK AFRIKAANS’

Singer and TikToker @jess.baney went viral on social media when she shared the differences she noticed between living in Durban and living in Pretoria.

The singer who lived in Durban most of her life and recently moved to Pretoria says people assumed because she was white, she speaks Afrikaans.

“I swear to you I had never in my life until I was 18, I had never heard someone speak Afrikaans. My friends and I used to joke that Afrikaans is myth. I didn’t think that people actually spoke Afrikaans.”

She adds that it never rains in Pretoria, it’s very cold and that people don’t know how-to drive-in Pretoria, while it’s nice and hot all year around in Durban.

“I didn’t know South Africa can get so cold,” she says.

She captioned her video: “Very keen to be moving back to Ballito next week though I must say…” 

Jacaranda FM reports that the TikToker’s video has received over 200,000 views at the time of publishing this article.

SOUTH AFRICANS REACT TO TIKTOKER’S VIDEO

Zamo.Ngubane: “The amount of times I tell my friends here in Cape Town that we all failed Afrikaans as a province in KZN. I’m from Durban.”
