Despite their unhappiness in their team’s struggles to win silverware in the last eight years, Kaizer Chiefs fans have found humour in the football club’s new business venture – the launch of the Soweto Giants’ very own chips brand.

On Monday, 2 October, Amakhosi announced that they are expanding their business model with their own brand of potato chips.

The announcement came ahead of coach Molefi Ntseki and the Glamour Boys’ DStv Premiership clash against Cape Town City at FNB stadium tomorrow.

The crisps come in three flavours; Grilled Steak, Tomato and Salt and Vinegar.

FARpost quoted the club’s corporate communications manager, Vina Maphosa, as saying: “This is part of the football world. You cannot watch TV without snacking; you cannot watch the match at the stadium without snacking, so this is what we are all about as Kaizer Chiefs. They [chips]come in different packages, and they will be selling all over at retail stores at a wonderful price.

“The small packet [36g] you get for R7,99, and the big packet [120g] is R19,99. You can also get them at the Kaizer Chiefs village store at the stadium.”

Chiefs’ business move is quite ironic because rival supporters have been calling their fans “chips” for years.

Joining the banter, fans said that it was also very ironic because they have suffered far too many losses on the pitch, therefore siyadliwa or ra jewa (directly translated “we get eaten” by other clubs).

“Bad timing for this Kaizer Chips, coz ra jewa shame 😭💔Our neighbors are gon call us snack,” said one fan.
