Lightning, meet thunder. After years of hinting and teasing fans, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson finally confirmed that he is bringing Black Adam to the big screen.

At this stage, it’s not yet clear if the Black Adam movie will serve as direct sequel to Shazam!, or it will be part of a bigger DC universe. Here’s what Johnson had to say:

“I’m honored to join the iconic DC Universe and it’s a true pleasure to become, Black Adam, [who] is blessed by magic with the powers equal to Superman, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line.”

Johnson explained that he as a kid, he had dreamed of being a superhero, especially after being introduced to the “greatest superhero of all time: Superman.”

Johnson’s dilemma: Superman vs Black Adam

However, he soon realised that “Superman was the hero I could never be,” because he was too rebellious, rambunctious, and resistant to convention and authority.

He added: “Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart – I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid, my superhero dreams have come true.

Johnson describes Black Adam as a “rebellious, one of a kind superhero who will always do what’s right for the people,” on one condition: Black Adam will do things his way.

Black Adam: What we know so far

The plot as still unknown at this stage. The only information that the Internet Movie Database was willing to part with, is: “A spin-off from Shazam! centering on the film’s anti-hero, Black Adam.”

Well, that’s something, at least. If you are unfamiliar with the superhero, here’s some background information that might help.

“As originally depicted, Black Adam was a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel* who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his Marvel Family associates.”

Do note that the Captain Marvel in this description refers to Shazam!, who was originally called Captain Marvel. It’s not Marvel’s Captain Marvel, portrayed by Brie Larson. Yes, we know it’s a bit confusing.

Cast and characters

Bad news here too, the complete cast has not yet been revealed. In fact, the producers are probably still holding auditions for the various roles.

Only Johnson confirmed his part in the film so far. We can say that Black Adam will be produced by Beau Flynn and Hiram Gracia, while Johnson will serve as executive producer.

Release Date

We know this one! Johnson confirmed that Black Adam will premiere on 22 December 2021, which is a bit of wait. But hey, time flies when you’re having fun, right?

What we can’t say at this stage is when the South African release date will be, but we’re hoping it’s not too long after the international premiere.
