More South African football fans watched the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) games on (South African Broadcasting Corporation) SABC than on Supersport.

SABC DOUBLES SUPERSPORTS VIEWERSHIP

SABC sportscaster, Xoliswa Zondo revealed on Thursday, 22 February on X that over 20 million viewers watched Afcon games on SABC compared to 10 million viewers on Supersport.

“A total of 21.8 million viewers watched the Afcon on SABC in comparison to 10.2 million viewers on Supersport. The Bafana-Nigeria semifinal was the most watched match. The game gained a whopping 5 million views on SABC 3”, she said.

Zondo adds that the figures show the importance of having sport on free to air channels. Had the SABC not acquired the rights to air Afcon games, over 20 million people would’ve been denied the privilege of seeing Bafana games.

Sowetan confirms that the South African national soccer team become Afcon Bronze medalists for the first time in 24 years.

FOOTBALL FANS REACT TO AFCON VIEWERSHIP

@NtateKheisara: “Those who have Supersport will not see how important this tweet is. I have DStv but I was watching games on SABC.”

@NamiGabos: “Not sure of this point but noted. I have DStv but I always choose SABC. The commentators are on another level even the analysis. When it comes to@TotalAFCON2023 @SABC_Sport was unmatched. I enjoyed every moment. Commentators were so knowledgeable as always.”

@BongiMbatha: “Possible double counting there. Some people have DStv, but for one or another reason decided to watch on SABC. Including language preference.”
