Severe storms caused significant damage, leaving most areas under the City of Tshwane without power.

Severe thunderstorms and a hailstorm battered parts of Tshwane on Tuesday afternoon, 20 February.

SEVERE STORMS LEAVE PARTS OF TSHWANE WITHOUT POWER

On Tuesday evening, Tshwane residents took to social media to share images and videos of the damage caused by severe thunderstorms and hailstorms.

Centurion is one of the most affected areas, as rain flooded roads and homes, uprooted trees, and damaged electricity infrastructure, leading to power outages.

Unfortunately, four people were struck by lightning. Two were confirmed dead, while two others are in hospital, according to reports.

MUNICIPALITY WORKING HARD TO RESTORE ELECTRICITY

The municipality said last night’s severe storm caused massive damage, leading to area power outages across most of the city.

“The storm has uprooted trees, and in some areas, tree branches have fallen on the road or overhead powerlines, causing a power trip.

“Teams are overwhelmed by this enormous task but are doing their utmost best to restore power amid the difficulty of inclement weather, which will impact restoration times,” the City of Tshwane said.
