Man sentenced to 175 years in prison

On Thursday the Mogwase Regional Court sentenced a 44-year-old man on various crimes including robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms.

A 44-year-old man was sentenced to seven life sentences and 175 years in prison.

The man identified as Thabang David Malonga was sentenced at the Mogwase Regional Court on Thursday.

He was arrested in 2019 in Krugersdorp after being found in possession of an unlawful firearm. He has been in jail since then up until his conviction and sentencing.

Captain Sam Tselanyane said the accused’s conviction follows an investigation by the police that started back in 2011.

The suspect, along with his accomplishes, attacked several victims in and around Sondela and Freedom Park informal settlements, outside Rustenburg.

 “The attacks were orchestrated on different dates using different sorts of dangerous weapons including firearms. In some instances, victims were robbed of their valuables including cash and cell phones. In the process, some of the victims were killed while others sustained serious injuries.”

Malonga was found guilty as charged and was sentenced.

“The court ordered that all sentences imposed will run concurrently with the life imprisonment. Malonga was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000),” said Tselanyane.

In another case, a man was searched and arrested by police he was found found with a hunting rifle and shotgun.

After he was found in possession of the two firearms, police linked the one firearm to a burglary and theft committed in KwaMsane in KwaZulu-Natal in 2011.

North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the man was searched and arrested for having a hunting rifle, a shotgun, as well as 109 various ammunition.
