Ghost tours are just the right type of adventure if you are looking for something unusual and spooky. A spooky night out could prove to be a fun evening.

There are various ghost tours in South Africa – from haunted houses in Kimberly to discovering the haunting secrets of Johannesburg.

Ghost tour on a bus

Ghost tours by bus are available in various South African cities including Johannesburg, Parys, Cullinan, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth.

These tours are available occasionally and some of them during certain seasons only.

Most of the tours are 5-hour journeys that start at 19:00. The spooky tour takes you to the city’s most haunted places and guests can listen to eerie electronic voice phenomena (EVP) recordings.

Spooky adventure on foot

If you prefer a more personal experience, Prince Albert in the Western Cape offers just that. Ailsa Tudhope known as The Story Weaver, guides the ghost tour that starts at dusk. She has been sharing the heritage of Prince Albert for many years. Her stories introduce you to characters who have lived in the town over the years. You’ll get to know some of the village’s hidden skeletons. The walk is available all year round.

Kimberly – more than diamonds that flicker

Apart from being famous for its big hole and diamonds, this mining town is also home to many haunted houses. According to Getaway, there are 158 verified haunted houses in this town.

The ghost tour begins at a memorial dedicated to British soldiers who lost their lives during the Anglo-Boer War. A few lucky visitors might hear a phantom Scottish piper and witness flickering lanterns – over 50% of visitors claim they have.

Prefer a ghost tour on your own?

A guided tour not spooky enough? There are many haunted buildings in South Africa for those who are more courageous.

Hanover in the Northern Cape, is known as one of the most haunted towns in South Africa. One of buildings that is believed to be haunted is Schreiner House. Olive Schreiner, SA author and one of the first campaigners for women’s rights, lived there.

Another town with a spooky reputation is Matjiesfontein in the Western Cape. Many people believe the Lord Milner hotel in the village is one of the most haunted hotels in South Africa, according to Getaway.
