CANCELLED: ‘7de Laan’ ends after 23 years

‘End of an era’: SABC2’s long running Afrikaans soapie ‘7de Laan’ is coming to an end after 23 years on television.

SABC’s popular soapie 7de Laan will not be renewed when season 24 ends in December 2023. This comes after entertainment commentator TVblogsbyMlu – confirmed that the show is being cancelled.

“7de Laan on SABC gets cancelled! According to the SABC, the show will not be commissioned for another season when the season 34 comes an end in December 2023,” tweeted Mlu.

‘7DE LAAN’ ENDS  

Jacaranda FM confirmed on Monday, 17 July that SABC 2 and Danie Odendaal Productions announced that the long-running popular soapie 7de Laan will not be recommissioned for another season when season 24 comes to an end in December 2023. 

7de Laan’s executive producer Thandi Ramathesele said in a statement that the show that touched the lives of many South Africans for over two decades is ending.

“As we come to the end of this chapter, we express our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated cast and crew who have poured their talent and passion into bringing the show to life.

Ramathesele added that they extend their deepest appreciation to the viewers and fans whose unwavering support has been the driving force behind their success.

“It is bittersweet to say goodbye, but we are filled with pride for the impact 7de Laan has had on our society, addressing important social issues and fostering [inclusivity], the show has made its mark on South African television. Thank you for being a part of this remarkable journey with us.”

SABC CONFIRMS CANCELLATION

Lala Tuku, who is the Head of Content for Video Entertainment for SABC confirmed 7de Laan cancellation and revealed to TshisaLIVE that SABC is proud to have worked with Danie Odendaal Productions.

Tuku added that the production company has been part of the journey leading and producing the best Afrikaans soapie on local television for SABC2. 

“7de Laan has penetrated the hearts of millions of South Africans. SABC wishes all the dedicated and talented cast and crew of 7de Laan all the best on their future endeavours.”
