Sama28: Black Coffee to receive special International Achievement Award

Black Coffee will be honoured with the International Achievement Award at the 28th annual SAMA awards on 28 August.

From becoming the first African DJ to win a Grammy to collaborating with Drake on a genre-bending album, Black Coffee has flown the South African flag high this year. The 28th annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs) are set to take place on 28 August at Sun City in the North West and the Drive hitmaker will be honoured with the International Achievement Award.

BLACK COFFEE TO RECEIVE WITH INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Black Coffee stunned Mzansi earlier this year after winning the Grammy Award for the Best Dance/Electronic Album for his 2021 project, Subconsciously. In June, the KwaZulu-Natal-born DJ executive produced Drake’s electronic album, Honestly, Nevermind

Black Coffee was also listed as a producer on the tracks, Texts Go Green, Currents and Overdrive

The DJ and producer is set to receive the International Achievement Award at the SAMAs later this month. 

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 

Legendary musicians Jimmy Dludlu, Joe Nina and McCoy Mrubata are set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAMAs this year. The award recognises musicians who have made incredible contributions to the local music industry. 

Joe Nina has had an illustrious music career. The Sbali hitmaker produced Brenda Fassie’s chart-topping single, Kuyoze Kuyovala in 1994.

Since 1997, Jimmy Dludlu has been serenading Mzansi with his jazz tunes while Cape Town-born saxophonist McCoy Mrubata has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists like Airto Moreira and Flora Purim.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW 

Zakes Bantwini leads the pack of nominees with a whopping seven nominations. The Osama hitmaker’s album, Ghetto King, is nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Dance Album and Best Engineered Album. 

The awards are set to take place on 28 August at Sun City but will be broadcast live on SABC 1 for music lovers at home.
