Tis’ the season! Five LGBTQI+ Christmas movies to enjoy [watch]

From ‘Single All The Way’ to romantic drama ‘Carol’, here are five LGBTQI+ Christmas movies to watch this festive season.

The festive season has officially began and what better way to welcome this warm time than with a comforting movie, a cocktail and a bowl of popcorn? Over the last few years, there have been several LGBTQI+ Christmas movies that have hit the world’s top streaming services. 

Some of the world’s top actors are featured in these movies and they are certainly worth the watch. Here are five LGBTQI+ Christmas movies you should watch this festive season.

1. ‘SINGLE ALL THE WAY’

Single All The Way is a romantic comedy film that follows Peter (Michel Urie) who goes to his family’s home with his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) for the Christmas holidays. 

Peter’s family is convinced that he and Nick are more than just friends but things take a turn when Peter’s mom (Kathy Najmy) sets him up with her hunky gym instructor (Luke Macfarlane). 

Single All The Way is full of laughter, Christmas cheer and lots of wine! The movie is available to stream on Netflix.

2. ‘HAPPIEST SEASON’

American actress Kristen Stewart is front and centre for this 2020 movie, Happiest Season. Abby (played by Stewart) plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) at Harper’s family’s celebration but things take a turn…

On the way to the celebration, Harper reveals that she has not come out to her conservative parents leaving Abby feeling trapped. 

Happiest Season also stars Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza. The movie is available to stream on Netflix.

3. ‘LET IT SNOW’

Let It Snow is a 2019 movie that follows a group of high school students navigating their friendships and complicated love lives. The film features a heartwarming LGBTQI+ storyline.

Dorrie (Liv Hewson) and her crush cheerleader Kerry (Anna Akana) are the perfect queer addition to Let It Snow. The movie is available to stream on Netflix.

4. ‘CAROL’

Carol is one of the most notable Christmas LGBTQI+ movies. The period drama movie follows Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) whose world spins after an encounter with Carol (Cate Blanchett) at the department store she works at in Manhattan, New York. 

The movie landed Cate Blanchette and Rooney Mara best actress and best supporting actress nominations at the Academy Awards in February 2016. Carol itself was nominated for best cinematography and best costume design. 

The movie is available to stream on Google Play.

5. ‘SEASON OF LOVE’

Season of Love is a 2019 movie that follows the lives of three queer couples over the Christmas holidays. The romantic comedy sees all three couples navigate through various challenges in their lives. 

The film stars Jessica Clark, Emily Goss, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Sandra Mae Frak and Laur Allen. 

Season Of Love is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
