The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot titled Bel-Air will be a one-hour-long series from Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Universal Television.

According to Deadline, Bel-Air will be based on Morgan Cooper’s 2019 short film based on the original series. Bel-Air has already been slated for two seasons. The upcoming series is described as a “serialized one-hour dramatic analog of the 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”.

The series will still follow a young man who leaves West Philadelphia (his hometown) to live with his extended family members in Bel-Air. The series will dive deeper into Will’s life in the upmarket neighbourhood but will also explore conflicts, emotions and biases that weren’t explored in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Bel-Air will be executive produced by Will Smith, Terence Carter, James Lassiter, Miguel Melendez and American producer Quincy Jones amongst others.

Jabari Banks will be making his debut on Bel-Air and coming from West Philadephia, he might be perfect for the role.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the role, Banks shared that growing up, people always told him he resembled Will Smith and his energy.

“When they chose me, it took a couple of weeks to realise that they chose me for me – for what I do. I just had to lean into my instincts and everything that I’ve learned from my experiences and there’s so many parallels between me and Will, the character.”

Other actors who are set to star in Bel-Air are Adrian Holmes, Cassandra Freeman, Olly Sholotan, Akira Akbar, Jimmy Akingbolam Jordan L Jones, Simone Joy Jones and singer Coco Jones.

The series will stream on Peacock in 2022. Peacock is yet to be available in South Africa.

In his new memoir Will, Will Smith revealed that he knew the exact moment that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had to end. The star actor explained that it was towards the end of the fifth season.

“The storylines were becoming increasingly hokey and it was difficult to maintain the ‘Freshness’. Anyone who has ever been on a sitcom can tell you the episode in which their show jumped the shark. Ours was season five, episode 15, Bullets Over Bel-Air.”

“The one in which I got shot and Carlton [Alfonso Ribertso] started carrying a gun. I had successfully fulfilled a promise to myself that I would never get caught in a cycle of deterioration without having the next thing on tap.”

“The show could easily sustain another season; this was my family; I loved them, But a movie career was now a viable option; I was at a crossroads.”
