Over the years, Ambitiouz Entertainment artists have topped the charts and bagged multiple music awards. The popular record label currently boasts an exceptional roster of musicians including genre-bending duo, Blaq Diamond.

The duo made history at the 27th annual South African Music Awards on Saturday this weekend for being the first duo to win the Artist of the Year award…but who are they?

Blaq Diamond is made up of Ndumiso “Ndu Brown” Mdletshe and Sphelele “Danya” Dunya. Although the two have dabbled in several genres, their main genres are pop and afro pop. Their group name is a metaphor for their lives, rising from tough beginnings to becoming music stars.

The 27-year-old artists grew up in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal and started their music journey at a young age. The pair met in 2010 when they entered a rap battle on a school bus and figured they’d be stronger as a pair. Since then they have won fans over with their unique voices and groovy sounds.

They’ve described their sound as music that is respectful and that heals.

“It is music that depicts the world we live in. Our music can be described as Afropop but you can’t put us in one category to be honest. Our music is called imbhube, which means lion. It is the music of the mountains because of the sounds that come from it.”

Their sophomore album, Umuthi, was absolutely breathtaking. Released in January last year, the album combines several genres, including maskandi, afro pop, and mbhaqanga which is a form of dance music that is mostly popular among Zulu musicians.

Umuthi featured their hit love song Ibhanoyi that scooped the Sama for Song of the Year in 2020.

They have also featured on music with their record label mates, Malome Vector, Miss Pru and Dr MaVibes.

The group made history as the first duo to win the Artist of the Year award at the Samas over the weekend. The fans of the nominated artists had to vote for their favourites, and Blaq Diamond received the largest amount of votes.

Miss Pru’s single Price to Pay that featured Blaq Diamond and Malome Vector, won the award for Music Video of the Year.

The pair are no strangers to the Samas. Besides scooping Song of the Year last year, they were also nominated under the Best Afro Pop Album category for Umuthi, but lost to Samthing Soweto.
