Organisers of the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg bid farewell to the entertainment venue for the last time by sharing a special throwback of iconic events that took place within its arena.

TicketPro Dome shares special throwback

Earlier this year, it was announced that the TicketPro Dome will be converted into a car dealership after the company secured the rights to the venue in Northgate. The Dome eventually had to close its doors due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and various national lockdowns which prohibited public gatherings since 2020.

When announcing the news, a statement from the Dome read:

“This is another devastating blow for the exhibitions, events, and entertainment industry due to COVID-19. The ban on public gatherings has meant that during 2020 and now 2021, the TicketPro Dome has been unable to operate”.

The history books

The Dome, which used to host the likes of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry, was previously known as Coca-Cola Dome and opened on 8 April 1998 with a concert by Diana Ross. The late Nelson Mandela made an appearance at the concert and the concert was attended by over 15 000 people.

Rapper Cassper Nyovest was the first local artist to sell out the Dome for his spectacular event series, ‘Fill Up the Dome’.

“When you think of the TicketPro Dome…” the throwback video states at the begining. “Do you think of Tomorrowland, Castle Lite Unlocks, Andrea Bocelli, Sam Smith, Kelly Clarkson, Prime Circle, One Republic, Pharrell Williams, Post Malone, Babyface…?”

A trip down memory lane

The Dome also played host to various exhibitions and events.

“Sad times. Watched many a concert there,” One Facebook user commented. “So so so sad!! Truly going to miss it and everyone there,” said another.

“Thanks to everyone at Ticketpro Dome for a lifetime of memories. This iconic landmark and treasure chest of memories will never be forgotten,” other messages continued.
