The plot of Squid Game – the hit Netflix series that has taken the world by storm – may seem like a far-fetched fantasy. But the truth is that many people relate to it’s gripping storyline and sombre set of characters.

Anupam — who was born in India and relocated to South Korea —  used his own encounters as a migrant worker in a foreign country to channel his character.

And the 32-year-old star — who studied film at the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul — claims he identifies with the role of the Pakistan family man, who starred as player 199.

“I connect with Ali a lot. In reality, I go to auditions, talk about payment, and I feel like every day is survival,” he told Korean news outlet Kyunghyang Shinmun.

Anupam also spoke out about how he prepared for the role — including perfecting his Pakistani accent, chatting to immigrants and researching the plight of migrant workers and labour issues in South Korea.

He told Variety: “I tried to go as close as I could to the character. I kept on thinking it’s going to be released in 190 countries, so how can I connect with the audience as a character. That was my internal quest all the way the day from the day they said yes to me, to the day it ended.”
