Mover and shaker DJ Zinhle bags first music award for ‘Umlilo’ hit

2020 has undoubtedly been Ntombezinhle Jiyane aka DJ Zinhle’s year.

Adding to her list of career achievements, the popular DJ, award-winning Forbes Africa Entertainer of the Year and successful businesswoman walked away with the Pan African Artist of the Year award at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (Namas) on Saturday 17 October.

Zinhle won the award’ for her Umlilo hit song which also features Mvzzle and Rethabile.

Even though Zinhle has been making waves in the music industry for more than a decade blessing her fans with hit after hit, in her recorded acceptance speech she revealed that this is actually her first award.

“I’ve actually never won an award before, so this is means a lot to me. On behalf of South Africa, Rethabile [Khumalo] and Mvzzle we would like to thank you for celebrating this song with us.

“We love the song and we are so glad that you love it so much that it actually won an award. We love you. We appreciate you. Thank you so much,” she said in the video.

The Namas are the desert country’s premier annual music awards ceremony, recognising musical excellence across all genres, from traditional to contemporary as well as paying tribute to the various facets of musical production in Namibia, as well as in Africa.

The businesswoman, mom, style icon and DJ has a range of achievement under her belt.

In September, she announced the launch of her Era by Zinhle sunglasses range and earlier in October, was announced as the CEO of the sparkling wine brand Boulevard Nectar Rose. A week after acquiring equity and taking over as CEO, the wine was sold out twice on Takealot.

“For me, the perfect business acquisition has to share great synergy with who I am, not only as a DJ but as a woman too. I’d like to think I am the perfect mix between power and sophistication and the Boulevard brand mirrors that nicely.

“I see great potential for Boulevard Rose to go to new heights with my signature touch,” she said after stepping into the brand’s CEO shoes. 

 In 2018, she launched Jiyane Atelier which is inspired by her vast travel experiences, fashion, interior decorating and love for furniture. To top that off, the hit maker’s jewellery design and watch company also falls under Era by DJ Zinhle.

In March, “Kairo’s Mom” as she is affectionately known, was also announced as the winner of the Forbes Woman Africa Entertainer Award 2020.
