The locally produced Ford Ranger dominated the list of top 10 used cars in South Africa in 2023. Here’s how the rest stacked up.

Using AutoTrader’s sales data for last year, we can now definitely state which were the top 10 used cars in South Africa in 2023. That’s right; with the new-car market receding over the same period, consumers are turned to used cars more than ever in 2023.

You could say the foot has not come off the gas in the used car market. In 2023, the number of used cars sold rose by 4.6% year-on-year. Overall, 367 075 used cars were sold at an average selling price of R399 163, says AutoTrader.

Additionally, the sale of 17 000-more units in 2023, and increased average selling price, helped drive up the total value of used-cars sold by 7.7% year-on-year. Therefore, amounting to a whopping R146.5 billion. As a result, this means 2023’s figures outperformed the previous year’s by nearly R10.5 billion.

BEST-SELLING BRAND OF 2023

Toyota continued to fuel car shoppers’ passions in 2023, selling the most cars (60 296). Like it did in 2022, the Japanese manufacturer led the way, with Volkswagen and Ford in their slipstream. BMW and Mercedes-Benz made up the top five.

“Suzuki was the star of the brand used sales growth show posting the biggest year-on-year growth of 28.8%. KIA, too, showed impressive growth of 16.6%,” said AutoTrader CEO George Mienie.

Mirroring 2022, the top 10 used cars in South Africa in 2023 were: Ford Ranger in first place with 20 156 sold, followed by the Toyota Hilux, VW Polo, VW Polo Vivo and Toyota Fortuner. Interestingly, in 2022, the Ranger bakkie managed to clinch a narrow win over its Japanese rival.

However, in 2023, the Ranger widened the used-car sales gap by 15.96%. The model with the highest sales growth was the KIA Picanto. The brilliant Korean supermini posted an impressive 18% sales growth.

TOP 10 VARIANTS

Volkswagen’s Polo 1.0 TSI bagged the top variant sales crown, retailing 9 318 units ahead of sibling VW Polo Vivo 1.4. Next, a trio of bakkies in the form of the Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6, Ford Ranger XL and Toyota Hilux 2.4GD-6. Adventure SUV, the Jeep Wrangler Sahara, made a good showing in sixth position with 3 007 sales.
