Selected retailers have launched a method of issuing grants that does not require a physical card. Many Postbank-issued SASSA gold cards were set to expire at the end of March 2023. And after much confusion due to poor communication from government, it was deemed that expired cards would stay valid and not need replacing.

We received many messages on our WhatsApp Line with beneficiaries complaining they’re unable to renew their cards at South African Post Office (SAPO) branches, for a number of reasons. The SAPO is in business rescue and has seen hundreds of branches close down already.

Thankfully, removing SAPO from the equation should only make the process easier. SASSA beneficiaries whose cards have expired no longer need to go to post office. They can access their grants safely, and for free, at Shoprite, Usave, Pick n Pay and Boxer.

HOW TO USE THE PAYMENT METHOD

To access SASSA grants if your card’s expired, bring along your ID documents and simply use your SASSA/gold card PIN. At the retailer’s till point, beneficiaries will be asked to validate their identity, enter their cellphone number and then their PIN in order to receive payment.

Here’s a quick five-hit checklist to remember:

  • Bring your cellphone and ID.
  • Go to the till point to verify your identity as a registered SASSA grant beneficiary.
  • You will then receive a free confirmation message on your phone.
  • Enter your SASSA/gold card PIN (the same one you use at the ATM).
  • The cashier will then give you the requested amount of money
