The Serbian star lost for the first time on the hallowed Centre Court in 10 years when he went down 1-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic was playing in a record 35th grand slam final.

His win-loss record now reads 23-12.

While 23 is a record for titles among the men, his 12 defeats in grand slam finals is now also a record he holds.

Novak Djokovic fined

Prior to Sunday’s match, Djokovic was tied on 11 defeats with Ivan Lendl and Roger Federer.

Meanwhile, as reported by The South African website, Novak Djokovic was fined for racquet abuse in the final.

The £6 100 (R143 000) fine won’t hit the 36-year-old hard in the pocket after he picked up £1.2 million (R28.2 million) for finishing as runner-up.
