Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has a big decision to make ahead of their must win match against Italy on Wednesday.

The South African women’s national soccer team are on the brink of making history and all they need is to win their World Cup group match against Italy to reach the knockout phase.

As things stand, Sweden will top the Group but could be followed by Banyana should they beat the Italians and Argentina fails to win their final match.

Ellis has a decision to make

Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has faced a backlash over her selection in the two matches. The 60-year-old mentor has opted to start with Kaylin Swart in goals ahead of Ayanda Dlamini in the World Cup so far.

“I’m not sure what that is based on because if you look at Kaylin’s involvement you know including the back passes are higher than many of the goalkeepers in the tournament,” said Ellis on Zoom.

“And we selected Kaylin specifically for this because she is able to assist us when we go back to get us on the front foot as well.”

Ellis was also criticized for benching experienced defender Noko Matlou.

“Look I don’t think it was a height problem.

“I think it was more of an organisational problem, as Sweden scored one out of the 13 corners that they had and you if you look they scored three out of almost seven against Italy who had more players than ours that had higher heights.

“The second goal that we conceded where the Argentine headed the ball, that player was only 1.5 meters. So it’s more of an organisational problem than a height problem, Ellis added.”

Banyana’s match with Italy starts at 9:00 on Wednesday.
