TRANSFER TALK: Chiefs to launch renewed R1.6m bid for overseas star

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly reignited interest in luring former SA youth international Thabo Cele to Naturena.

There is no doubt that Chiefs are clearly making some ambitious moves in the transfer market in the off-season, and 25-year-old Thabo Cele – who currently plays for Polish side Radomiak Radom – is the latest target to be linked with the club.

Cele has previously been spoken of as a sought-after recruit for Amakhosi, particularly when he was a free agent last year. However, he ended up making the move to Radomiak on a two-year deal in October 2021.

Nevertheless, it’s reported by Soccer Laduma that Chiefs may have launched a €100 000 (±R1.67m) bid to try and lure him back to South Africa, although Polish journalist Szymon Janczyk reports that Radomiak are keen to retain the services of Cele, who remains part of coach Mariusz Lewandowski’s plans.

That transfer talk is certainly one to keep an eye on, while centre-back Daniel Cardoso is also set to hold key talks with Kaizer Chiefs over his future at the club as his contract is about to expire.

Cardoso has been at Kaizer Chiefs for the past seven seasons, but there has been a lack of clarity over his future for some time, with his contract set to come to an end on 30 June.

“We still have to sit and discuss everything, and that will be coming in the next few days but I know that they are doing a bit of a clean-up,” said Cardoso as quoted by Sowetan Live.

“I’m sure everybody has seen it for quite some time already but we will wait and see. I have been here for quite some time and I hope to stay on. There are a lot of teams that are interested in SA and few clubs abroad, so I will wait until talks are gone under the water. At the moment it’s off-season and all I want is to be with my family and relax, and get my mind off football.”

As Chiefs undergo a rebuilding phase, it was recently confirmed that the club had successfully secured the services of highly-regarded young Stellies striker Ashley du Preez.

Transfer talk indicated that if Du Preez was heading to Naturena on a cash-plus-player exchange, that Happy Mashiane could then head to Stellenbosch, where he would be hoping to receive more game-time after his career has somewhat stalled at Amakhosi recently.

However, Chiefs apparently sealed what is a cash-only deal for Du Preez after the intervention of Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung Snr.

According to the report by KickOff.com, sources have suggested the 24-year-old Mashiane will remain at Naturena as he also features in the plans of newly-appointed head coach Arthur Zwane.

Plenty of attention has been focused on Chiefs’ current recruitment drive

Meanwhile, Sekhukhune United club captain Yusuf Maart, who was believed to be a key target for Chiefs, is not expected to make the move.

It’s clear that Chiefs are looking to rebuild their squad to be more competitive next year, and after signing Siyethemba Sithebe from AmaZulu on a pre-contract, reports also recently suggested Chiefs are closing in on Maart.

Some reports suggested that the offer was likely to be accepted, but Sekhukhune United CEO Jonas Malatji has now told SowetanLive that he expects Maart to stay with the club because the offers that have come through are not good enough.

“Yusuf isn’t going as things stand. Remember, I am not a selling team. If you really need my player, when I say give me one cent you must give me that one cent… don’t say you’re going to give me half cent,” Malatji explained.

“Yes, I have been approached by a few clubs, unfortunately I won’t reveal their names, but the figures they tell me about don’t even come close to what I am asking for.”
