SuperSport United beat Cape Town City 1-0 in a DStv Premiership at the TUT Stadium on Fridat night.

A win puts Matsatsantsa second on the log, behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

SuperSport started with intent and created scoring opportunities but City’s defence was up to the task. New signing Etiosa Ighodaro fired just wide of the right post with a shot on the turn in the 12th minute.

It was United again who came back strongly as City conceded a corner-kick in the 20th minute but Ronald Pfumbidzai’s header went near the post after a brilliant delivery by Grant Margeman.

SuperSport looking sharp this season

In the 31st minute, Matsatsantsa were unlucky as Ighodaro’s effort was denied by the frame of the goal. Despite dominating the first half an hour, SuperSport failed to find the opening goal and it looked like it was going to be another long night for Gavin Hunt’s men.

With four minutes remaining before end of the first half, Ricardo Goss pulled a clever save from Tshegofatso Nyama’s effort to keep the scored 0-0.

SuperSport continued where they left off as Margeman’s long range effort went near post after receiving a brilliant delivery from Gamphani Lungu.

Matsatsantsa’s prayers were finally answered when City’s keeper Keet saved Margeman’s initial shot inside the box and Ighodaro kept his composure and slotted home the rebound.

After the goal, City started to throw numbers forward as they looked for a goal. Goss pulled off three saves within a space of three minutes to prevent Taahir Goedeman and Khanyisa Mayo from equalizing.

In the 75th minute Darwin Gonzalez’s effort hit the upright in what looked like to be an equalizer.

SuperSport’s win sees them maintain their unbeaten run to the new campaign and leapfrogged City into second place.
