Pirates have been rumoured to be preparing to let go of a few players either in the current or next transfer window, with incomings also thought to be the order of the day.

Pirates looking to move players on

Some of the names that have been branded about for a potential exit are Cameroonian striking duo Soauibou Marou, Bienvenu Eva Nga as well as Ghana international goalkeeper Richard Ofori. On the flip side though, Pirates have also been linked with a few incomings including long-term target in Namibian left back Riaan Hanamub and Zimbabwean centre back Frank Makarati. A surprise name was also recently added to that list in the form of Darrel Matsheke.

Matsheke had only just joined Stellenbosch as a free agent on a one-year deal, after he was released by Kaizer Chiefs. The midfielder starred for Amakhosi’s reserve side, before impressing enough to earn his senior debut under then coach Gavin Hunt, during the 2020/21 season, a campaign the club ended up giving a few academy players an opportunity due to a FIFA transfer ban imposed on the club.

Matsheke blow for Buccaneers?

Matsheke had a promising start to life at Chiefs but quickly fell out of favour with Hunt, and was loaned out the next campaign. He never made it back to club. Stellies decided to offer him a short-term deal and he has since impressed at the Cape Winelands side. His performances even went as far as catching the eye of Pirates. Not too long ago, it was rumoured that they were looking at signing the player, and it seemed like it would be a straightforward deal to do then.

This was because, at this point Matsheke is in the last six months of his contract at Stellies, therefore allowing him to talk to any club of his choice and sign a pre-contract. Pirates are able to engage with the player on a deal but according to Soccer-Laduma, the Carling Knockout Cup holders are not ready to lose the player and are engaging with him on the possibility of extending his deal.

Stellies set to extend deal?

“Stellenbosch FC is happy with Darrel Matsheke’s contribution and the coach has been impressed with his performances. The plan is to keep him beyond this season. When he joined the club, not everybody was sure how he would do as he was a free agent and appeared to have no one keen to offer him a contract. That’s why he was offered just a one-year deal but the club does have an option to extend for another year and that is what is likely to happen in a few weeks time” a source said to the same publication.
