Kaizer Chiefs said goodbye to one of their former stars today. Siphiwe Mkhonza has died at the age of 45 following kidney infections.

Siphiwe Mkhonza was champion with Kaizer Chiefs

Mkhonza represented several South African clubs with distinction. His career started at the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, and his journey took him to Ria Stars, Golden Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Maritzburg, AmaZulu and Black Leopards. His most glorious period came in the 2004/05 campaign when he lifted the PSL title with Chiefs, and soon after, he was called up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the first time. Mkhonza collected seven international caps in total.

Former SuperSport TV commentator Duane Dell’Oca, who worked with Mkhonza at SABC, posted on X:

“I am devastated by the news of Siphiwe Mkhonza’s untimely passing. A great player and a joyful man with a zest for life, we had many years of fun together. He was so cool that he commentated with a cap on under his headphones. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP, Dr Mnandi.”

Glamour Boys have a tough week ahead of them

Chiefs face Golden Arrows on Tuesday, 5 March, before they clash with Orlando Pirates on Saturday. Edmilson Dove will certainly miss the match through suspension, while three others are walking a suspension tightrope. Should Yusuf Maart, Pule Mmodi or Edson Castillo collect a booking against Golden Arrows, they’ll miss the Derby.
