Fortune Makaringe came off the bench to score the only goal of the game and hand Pirates all the points at Ellis Park Stadium.

As a result, Pirates moved up to fourth on the standings with 38 points from 24 league games, and they are a point behind their arch-rivals.

Pirates dominated the early exchanges of the game as Sekhukhune were still trying to find their feet.

When Sekhukhune got their chance at goal, it was through Yusuf Maart who blasted his attempted shot over the crossbar in the 13th minute.

Pirates enjoyed the ball possession but they were not able to hurt Sekhukhune who were happy to allow them to keep the ball.

Siphesihle Ndlovu then had the chance to fire Pirates ahead in the 32nd minute in what was his team’s first real shot at goal.

However, the midfielder ballooned his effort over the crossbar, much to the frustration of the Pirates bench.

Sekhukhune had to put a lot of numbers behind the ball to deal with the crosses played into the box by Pirates before the interval.

Sekhukhune had a better start to the second half as they pushed high up in an attempt to create goalscoring chances.

But Pirates had some good opportunities with Goodman Mosele and Ndlovu seeing their attempts being blocked by Sekhukhune.

Pirates would win a penalty when Edwin Gyimah brought Ndlovun down inside the Sekhukhune box in the 65th minute.

Pirates made three changes at once in the 79th minute as Thembinkosi Lorch, Makaringe and Bongani Sam all entered the field.

Makaringe made an immediate impact as he broke the deadlock with a sublime finish from outside the box in the 82nd minute following an error by goalkeeper Ndlovu.
